Installing Fonts

Home

The following instructions elaborate on installing fonts on gentoo linux. Usually the fonts are in .ttf format in windows. The following was tried with a Tamil font (tamilnet.ttf) and this shouldn't make a difference with other .ttf files.

Login as root

$ su

Make a directory called tamilttf under /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts

# cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/
# mkdir tamilttf
# cd tamilttf/

Copy the downloaded Tamil ttf fonts to the tamilttf directory.

# cp /home/downloads/*.ttf /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/tamilttf/
# ls
Akshar.ttf TSCuthamba.ttf Vikat_tm.ttf

Create the fonts.scale and a fonts.dir files

# ttmkfdir > fonts.scale
# mkfontdir
# ls
Akshar.ttf TSCuthamba.ttf Vikat_tm.ttf fonts.dir fonts.scale

Install the fonts by pointing to this directory

# xset +fp /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/tamilttf/
# xset fp rehash
