Installing GNOME

Emerge gnome and xscreensaver from the prompt

#emerge gnome xscreensaver

Since gnome is a huge file you can download it first and then emerge it.

#emerge -f gnome
#emerge -f xscreensaver
#emerge gnome xscreensaver


Update the environment variables
# env-update && source /etc/profile
Add famd, hald and mDNSResponder to the default runlevel
# /etc/init.d/famd start
# rc-update add famd default

# /etc/init.d/hald start
# rc-update add hald default

# /etc/init.d/mDNSResponder start
# rc-update add mDNSResponder default
Modify rc.conf file by changing the values of DISPLAYMANAGER and XSESSION

#nano -w /etc/rc.conf

DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm"
XSESSION="Gnome"


Restart the system and issue the startx or the gdm command at the bash prompt

#startx
or
#gdm


Installing KDE

Emerge kde.

#emerge -f kde
#emerge kde


Reboot the system. Start KDE by typing gdm at prompt and choosing KDE from sessions

#gdm
