Troubleshooting

Case 1: (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA X driver not found)

Im trying to install nvidia drivers in gentoo linux. I'm able to load gnome but when i check my console, it says,

(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA X driver not found)

When i tried "nvidia" instead of "nv" under Section "Device" the display froze and i have to restart the system each time. Somehow i'm not able to get the nvidia logo screen before gnome starts.

Solution 1: This could happen when older nvidia-glx modules are emerged by default. To get the latest testing driver, create a new file called /etc/portage/package.keywords

#nano -w /etc/portage/package.keywords

Enter the following lines, save and exit the file.

media-video/nvidia-kernel ~x86
media-video/nvidia-glx ~x86

Emerge nvidia-glx

#emerge nvidia-glx

Run modprobe

#modprobe nvidia

Edit file /etc/modules.autoload.d/(kernel-version) and include 'nvidia'(without the single quotes)

#modules-update
#opengl-update nvidia

Linux might prompt you to upgrade a few configuration files in /etc. Run etc-update..

#etc-update

It should merge the new nvidia all by itself :-)
If not then you'll have to do it manually by following the console guidline.
Reboot the system and load startx.

#startx

You should be able to see the nvidia logo.
